Charging... May. 18th, 2008 @ 12:28 am

I am currently charging 18 AA batteries at the same time. Those 1W LEDs drain that energy quickly.

NOS update May. 17th, 2008 @ 05:37 pm
[info]technolope
We've had about 20 groups, or about 40 people, through the living room between noon and 5:30 today. We sold two small pieces so far, but felt some interest from a few others. It's fun talking to most of the people, but others (the solo science-y people) can be taxing.

I'm looking forward to the party tonight, I need some booze.

Things to do before noon tomorrow May. 16th, 2008 @ 07:32 pm

Before I open our doors for Newton Open Studios tomorrow, I need to:

1) Move the stone table to the hallway and put Turbulence... on it;
2) done Vacuum, again;
3) done Solder 7 battery packs onto their respective LED arms, place over dark pieces;
4) done Get some sort of receipt thing, such that writing once makes 2 or 3 copies;
5) done Go buy some 2-liters of Coke with $20 bills so that I can stock up on $10s and $5s;
6) done Compose a price sheet that includes everything for sale: glass sculptures, 8x11 prints, 24x24 prints (including which number in the series is next), and LED lights (all $25 except big pieces);
7) done Make a price sheet for Artist's Proofs;
8) done Prepare a binder with resume, list of exhibitions, writings, and price list;
9) Add interactivity to my "Dancing dots" screen-saver (not gunna happen in time);
10) done Make sure all of the AA and AAA batteries are fully charged;
11) Set up the Mac with Smoke Water Fire playing;
12) Possibly bake some more chocolate chip cookies (I only got 35 out of the last batch);
13) Set up a nice-looking and properly-lit glass block display;
14) Blow up some red balloons and tie them to the telephone pole and the street sign;
15) done Thoroughly clean the vestibule;
16) Hang a small piece in the vestibule;
17) done Wash the outside of the front door; and
18) Put a NOS poster on both front doors.

Yeah, that's it.

Bake night at Casa Stock May. 15th, 2008 @ 10:14 pm

I'm making peanut butter cookies tonight. The recipe is from the Fannie Farmer Cookbook. The first batch is out in 7 minutes.

In other news, I can walk 3 blocks and buy a bottle of '99 late-bottle vintage port. This could be dangerous.

Made a sale today! May. 15th, 2008 @ 11:20 am

I sold my house copy of Midnight in the Bathtub of Good and Evil this morning---two days before I open my doors for Newton Open Studios. Here's hoping that 2008 won't run a defecit (and the IRS is counting)!

This post is content-free, because it's far funnier than my life:

TBF Challenge Structure Suggestions? May. 9th, 2008 @ 10:17 pm
[info]_earthshine_, posting in [info]timebombfiction

Hey, all... I'm stoked to see so much activity on here lately, as well as some new members trickling in to join the fun.

I'm looking for some input from folks on the rules -- particularly the whole announcement-challenge-response structure. We've had some (technically rulebreaking but still cool) challenges of new types pop up -- instant challenges under cuts, or challenges with fuses longer than a week (obviating the need for a week-heads-up announcement), etc. -- and i'd like to find ways to incorporate them into TBF officially.

I'd like to open up some discussion of how we can relax the rules of TBF but still have just enough structure to encourage the whole spirit of the thing (that being motivation to write something quickly without regard for the self-critical quality-checking that prevents many of us from writing in the first place).

Thoughts? Please comment and tell us what works for you on TBF and what doesn't.

Non-standard challenge. Post it early as tonight or late as a week from now. May. 9th, 2008 @ 05:30 pm

I was just thinking about the Uncanny Valley again, and really enjoying scaring myself with the idea of "what if I was talking to a person, liking them, and after a while of being totally without any doubt they were human, I saw one of those telltale notches on their wrist, or a movement of their eye, and suddenly knew they were a construct." WOoo! Nice and scary!! : )

I challenge anyone who is into this sort of thing to write a short story about an encounter like this, where you spend a relatively long time with a person, having a positive encounter with them and connecting on an emotional level, and then you suddenly realize they are a mechanism.

After brushing up on the above idea, please feel free to write a story -- enjoy!

Advisory Board Nominations

We'd like to remind you that the nomination process for LiveJournal Advisory Board user-representatives has begun. If you think you're fit for the job, now's the time to nominate yourself! After all, you're the only who can do it. In two weeks, on the 22nd, the voting process will begin; we'll remind you about it again here.

If you're interested in keeping up with the nominations, watch [info]lj_election_en. We'll post the results and announce the winner by the end of the day on May 30th. The new user-representatives will be seated on June 1st. Further details can also be found in [info]lj_2008.

Advisory Board Nominations Begin

This morning we are opening the nomination process for the user-representative positions on the LiveJournal Advisory Board. A full description of the process can be found here.

To get you started, here are the basic things you should know:

- You may only nominate yourself
- Each nominee will need 100 motions of support in order to be eligible to be a candidate
- We ask that you keep your comments on the nomination posts to "I support this nomination" or something to that effect; be kind to those who will need to count the "supports", please.
- Although the nominations and election poll will take place in [info]lj_election_en, you do not need to watch the community in order to keep up with the election; we'll announce everything here as well.

Everyone here at LiveJournal is looking forward to this first-ever User-Representative election! We'd like to thank everyone who is participating. Some words from our current Advisory Board members:

danah boyd: “LiveJournal is filled with very passionate users. These users have helped shaped LJ's various communities over the last decade and it gives me great joy that LJ is recognizing and incorporating users' voices into the decision-making processes. Having user representatives from different parts of LJ on the Advisory Board will help make sure that the company is meeting the needs of its diverse constituents.”

Esther Dyson: "I'm sure we'll learn a lot from the process, and later on from the two users selected as well. Especially, I hope that the discussions before the voting will be more meaningful and more focused on policy than those in some offline campaigns."

Brad Fitzpatrick: "It's cool that SUP is getting users involved with the LiveJournal decision-making process. I look forward to seeing who the community elects and the results of our efforts working together."

Professor Lawrence Lessig: “The user elections will provide a critical check on LJ's process of maintaining a valuable and trustworthy environment for the LJ community. The mandate of the elections will give the user representatives pride of place among the members of the Advisory Board. Each of us will look to them to guide us in our judgment about how best to make LJ the community we all aspire that it will be. I look forward to welcoming the user representatives, and learning a great deal from them.”
