for the want of a minute...
ever have one of those days when you would have saved yourself a whole lot of trouble if you'd left just 5 minutes earlier?? :/

I definitely experience this in various forms on a regular basis. I call them "timing gates", and the best example is in the old days, where for want of 10 seconds or not having a quarter ready for the turnstile, you'd watch the ferry loading door close in your face and have to wait 20 minutes.

My case is similar but not exactly the same. Think 'Office Space'. I was thinking of cutting out a few minutes early and just before I was about to leave someone stopped by with a "I just broke this can you fix it?" problem that was going to take me an hour or so to fix (largely because I last worked on it several months ago and I don't remember all the little quirks that make it do the right or wrong thing)... and I was (and am) taking off the next day ... and it wasn't something that could be broken for a few days. If I'd just left before she stopped by I would've been off the hook. Oh well, I fixed it last night after the kiddieos fell asleep, and all is well again.

Sure... far less predictable in your case, but then again so are mine: i get to the intersection 5 seconds too late and have to wait for the traffic that's now streaming out of the light, which sets me back 2 minutes. Not as dramatic and example, i suppose, but you get the point.
